Description of the Underwater Navigator Specialty Course:

The PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty Course is designed for certified divers who want to become experts in underwater direction-finding. This course will sharpen your skills and build your confidence so you can lead dives and return to your starting point without second-guessing. Through hands-on training and dive planning, you’ll learn how to use both natural navigation and a compass to move precisely and purposefully underwater.

What to Expect:

Theory Session – Your day begins with a detailed briefing covering navigation principles, compass use, natural navigation clues, map-making, and tips for better underwater orientation.
Ocean Dives (4 dives focused on navigation exercises) – During three guided dives in Playa del Carmen, you’ll practice using a compass (with square and reverse patterns), finding your way using natural signs, estimating distance underwater, making and following navigation routes, finding lost objects, and drawing simple underwater maps.

Is certification required?

Yes, you must be at least Open Water certified to join the Underwater Navigator Specialty Course.

What are the benefits of this specialty?

These skills build more confidence and independence underwater, improve dive planning and safety, and are especially valuable for dive professionals, wreck divers, and search and recovery divers.

Do I need to complete any theory or exams?

Yes, there’s a bit of independent study to do before the dives. It’s not a full classroom course like the Open Water, but you’ll review some theory—don’t worry, there’s no exam.

What skills will I learn?

This course covers compass navigation in straight lines and square patterns, estimating distance underwater, using natural navigation cues, marking and relocating specific underwater sites, and combining compass and natural navigation techniques.

What is the Cancellation Policy?

If canceled or modified up to 24 hours before the trip date, no fee will be charged. If canceled or modified later, or in the event of a no-show, 100% of the prepaid deposit will be charged. No fee applies if the activity is canceled by Xico Dive Center or cannot be rescheduled due to rough sea conditions or medical reasons (if a valid certificate is provided within 24 hours after no-show or cancellation). Under no circumstances, if there is a cancellation and e-learning has been activated, you will not be refunded your deposit for the e-learning.
