Wreck Diving in Playa del Carmen, Cozumel & Puerto Morelos

Our Riviera Maya wreck diving options are for certified divers who want something more adventurous than a standard reef dive. Depending on your level, date, logistics, weather and availability, wreck diving from Playa del Carmen can mean Mama Viña, the C-53 wreck in Cozumel, or the C-56 wreck in Puerto Morelos.

This is the best choice if you want structure, history, artificial reef life and a more exciting dive profile — but it is not the best first step for brand-new, nervous or rusty divers.

Best for: certified divers with recent ocean experience, good buoyancy, comfort following a guide, and interest in a wreck dive route around Playa del Carmen, Cozumel or Puerto Morelos.

Quick Facts

  • Dive type: guided wreck diving for certified divers
  • Main routes: Mama Viña, Cozumel C-53, or Puerto Morelos C-56

Which Wreck Dive Route Should You Choose?

Wreck diving around the Riviera Maya is not one fixed product. The best route depends on your certification, last dive date, comfort with depth and current, travel schedule, and what is realistic for the conditions.

Simple recommendation: Choose Mama Viña if you want the easiest local wreck option from Playa del Carmen. Choose Cozumel if you are already interested in a Cozumel dive day and want to ask if the C-53 wreck is realistic. Choose Puerto Morelos if you specifically want the C-56 wreck plus protected reef route.

Playa del Carmen / Mama Viña

Best for: certified divers who want the simplest local wreck option from Playa del Carmen.

Why choose it: Mama Viña is usually the easiest wreck route logistically if you are staying in Playa del Carmen. It is still better for divers with good buoyancy, recent experience and comfort in possible current.

Next step: Keep reading this page and send us your certification level, last dive date, approximate number of dives and preferred date so we can confirm if Mama Viña fits your level.

Cozumel / C-53 Wreck

Best for: divers who want Cozumel-style diving and want to know if a wreck option is possible.

Why choose it: Cozumel is known for drift diving, clear water, reef formations and a more premium dive-day feel. The C-53 wreck option depends on route, availability, conditions, logistics and certification level.

Next step: If your main goal is Cozumel diving, start with our Cozumel diving from Playa del Carmen page.

Puerto Morelos / C-56 Wreck

Best for: divers who specifically want the C-56 wreck and a protected reef second dive.

Why choose it: Puerto Morelos is a separate route with different logistics. It is usually a wreck plus reef dive day, with car-based transport and route-specific planning.

Next step: If you already know you want this route, use the dedicated Diving in Puerto Morelos page.

Playa del Carmen Wreck Diving: Mama Viña

The main local wreck option from Playa del Carmen is Mama Viña. This is usually the most practical wreck route if you are staying in Playa and want a wreck experience without turning the day into a longer transfer.

Mama Viña is better suited for certified divers with good buoyancy, comfort in the ocean, and enough experience to handle a deeper wreck profile and possible current.

This route can be a good fit if:

  • You are a certified diver.
  • You want a wreck dive close to Playa del Carmen.
  • You have good buoyancy control.
  • You are comfortable following a guide and dive plan.
  • You want a more adventurous local dive than a standard easy reef.

If you want to understand the local wreck better before booking, read our guide to Mama Viña wreck diving in Playa del Carmen.

Cozumel Wreck Diving: C-53

Cozumel is famous for drift diving, reef formations, walls and clear-water reef scenery. The C-53 wreck can be a strong option for divers who want a Cozumel dive day with a wreck route if conditions and logistics allow it.

Cozumel wreck diving can be a good fit if:

  • You are already interested in Cozumel diving.
  • You are comfortable with Cozumel-style drift conditions.
  • You want a wreck option if it is realistic for your date and level.
  • You understand that the final route depends on availability, conditions and guide judgment.

If your main goal is a Cozumel reef day, use the main Cozumel diving from Playa del Carmen page.

Puerto Morelos Wreck Diving: C-56

Puerto Morelos has one of the main wreck diving options in the Riviera Maya: the C-56 wreck. This route is different from local Playa del Carmen diving because it usually requires vehicle transport and separate logistics.

The Puerto Morelos dive day is typically a 2-dive route: the C-56 wreck plus a second dive on the protected Puerto Morelos reefs, depending on conditions and the confirmed plan.

This route can be a good fit if:

  • You specifically want to dive the C-56 wreck.
  • You want a wreck plus reef dive day.
  • You are comfortable with a longer logistics day.
  • You have the right certification and recent experience.
  • You can be flexible with timing, weather and availability.

If you already know you want this route, use the full Diving in Puerto Morelos page. That is the best page for the Puerto Morelos wreck and reef product.

Who This Wreck Dive Page Is For

This page is a good fit if:

  • You are a certified diver.
  • You want to compare wreck diving routes from Playa del Carmen.
  • You are interested in Mama Viña, C-53 or C-56.
  • You have recent ocean diving experience.
  • You are comfortable with buoyancy, current and following a guide.
  • You want help choosing the right wreck route for your level.

This is not the best fit if:

  • You are not certified.
  • You want to try scuba for the first time.
  • You are very nervous underwater.
  • You have not dived in a long time and feel rusty.
  • You want the easiest possible beginner reef dive.

If you are not certified yet, start with Discover Scuba Diving or the PADI Open Water Diver Course. If you are certified but rusty, start with the PADI ReActivate Refresher Course or an easier local reef dive in Playa del Carmen.

Guided Wreck Dive or PADI Wreck Diver Course?

A guided wreck dive and a wreck-diving course are not the same thing.

  • Guided wreck dive: best for certified divers who want to experience a wreck with a guide within their current training and the daily conditions.
  • PADI Wreck Diver Course: best for divers who want structured wreck-diving training, including procedures, planning, hazards, mapping and safer wreck techniques.

If your goal is to become more trained and confident around wrecks, choose the PADI Wreck Diver Course.

Do We Enter the Wreck?

Wreck penetration is not automatically included in a guided wreck dive. Entering a wreck requires the right training, conditions, equipment, plan and guide decision.

Most recreational guided wreck dives focus on exploring the outside structure safely, enjoying the marine life, and following the planned route.

If you want to learn wreck procedures properly, including how to assess hazards and plan wreck dives, the PADI Wreck Diver Course is the safer training path.

What You May See

Wrecks often attract marine life because the structure creates shelter and habitat. What you see depends on the wreck, location, season, current, visibility and conditions.

Depending on the route, you may see:

  • Schools of fish around the structure
  • Barracuda
  • Moray eels
  • Rays
  • Sponges and coral growth
  • Crabs and lobsters
  • Reef fish using the wreck as shelter

Marine life is never guaranteed. The wreck itself is the main attraction.

What’s Included

Because there are different wreck routes, inclusions can vary by option. We will confirm the exact details before booking.

Typical guided wreck dive planning may include:

  • Wreck dive route recommendation based on your level
  • Professional certified dive guide
  • 2 guided dives when the confirmed route uses a standard 2-dive plan
  • Tank and weights
  • Route-specific boat, transport or marina logistics
  • Dive briefing and safety plan
  • Insurance
  • Route confirmation based on conditions and availability

Rental equipment is not included in the base route price unless we confirm otherwise. If you need gear, premium rental equipment is available for 500 MXN (≈$27 USD).

Puerto Morelos is normally handled through the dedicated Diving in Puerto Morelos product because that route includes different transport and logistics. Cozumel wreck options are connected to Cozumel logistics, and local Playa wreck diving is usually the simplest wreck route from Playa del Carmen.

What to Bring

  • Scuba certification card or online certification record
  • Swimwear
  • Towel
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Any personal dive gear you prefer to use
  • Dive computer if you have one
  • Medical clearance if required

If you are bringing your own gear, make sure it has been serviced and is suitable for the planned wreck dive.

How to Book

To request availability, send us your preferred date, certification level, last dive date, approximate number of logged dives, and whether you prefer Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, or Puerto Morelos.

We will confirm the realistic route based on your level, weather, logistics and availability. Then we confirm the schedule, price, inclusions, rental gear, and what to bring.

Not sure which wreck dive to book? Send us your certification level, last dive date, approximate number of dives, and preferred date. We will recommend the realistic wreck route for your level and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wreck Diving in the Riviera Maya

Where is the meeting point?

We meet at Xico Dive Center, located on Flamingos Street between 40th Street North and 42nd Street North, in the Zazil-Ha neighborhood of Playa del Carmen.

Please arrive on time so we can complete check-in, paperwork, equipment fitting, and the dive briefing before heading to the boat.

Do I need to be certified for wreck diving?

Yes. Wreck diving is for certified divers. It is not for Discover Scuba Diving guests or non-certified beginners.

If you are not certified yet, start with Discover Scuba Diving or the PADI Open Water Diver Course.

Which wreck dive is the easiest from Playa del Carmen?

The easiest local wreck route is usually Mama Viña because it is the closest wreck option from Playa del Carmen. It still depends on certification level, recent experience, current, conditions and guide judgment.

What is the Puerto Morelos C-56 wreck dive?

The Puerto Morelos route is usually based around the C-56 wreck, often combined with a second dive on the protected Puerto Morelos reefs. This route has different logistics and is handled through the Diving in Puerto Morelos product.

Can I dive the C-53 wreck in Cozumel from Playa del Carmen?

It may be possible depending on Cozumel logistics, route availability, certification level, current and conditions. If your main goal is Cozumel, start with our Cozumel diving from Playa del Carmen page.

Can Open Water divers join a wreck dive?

Some Open Water divers may be able to join certain wreck dives depending on site depth, conditions, recent experience and guide judgment. However, Advanced Open Water or equivalent experience may be recommended or required for some routes.

Is wreck diving good for beginners?

Wreck diving is usually not the best first choice for new, nervous or rusty divers. If you want an easier first dive day, start with local reef diving in Playa del Carmen or a PADI ReActivate refresher.

Do we go inside the wreck?

Wreck penetration is not automatically included. Most guided recreational wreck dives focus on the outside structure. Entering a wreck requires the right training, conditions, equipment, route plan and guide decision.

What is the difference between a guided wreck dive and the PADI Wreck Diver Course?

A guided wreck dive is an experience for certified divers. The PADI Wreck Diver Course is structured training that teaches wreck-diving procedures, planning, hazards, mapping and safer wreck techniques.

Is rental equipment included?

Rental equipment depends on the route and final booking details. Premium rental equipment is available for 500 MXN (≈$27 USD) if you need gear. We will confirm the exact inclusions before you book.

How do I choose the right wreck dive?

Send us your certification level, last dive date, approximate number of logged dives, preferred date and whether you prefer Playa del Carmen, Cozumel or Puerto Morelos. We will recommend the realistic wreck route for your level and conditions.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel or modify your reservation up to 24 hours before the scheduled activity or course start time with no cancellation fee.

If you cancel or modify less than 24 hours before the scheduled start time, or if you do not show up, the prepaid deposit is non-refundable.

If Xico Dive Center cancels the activity or course because of weather, port closure, unsafe conditions, or operational reasons, we will first try to reschedule. If rescheduling is not possible, no cancellation fee will apply.

For medical cancellations, no cancellation fee will apply only if a valid medical certificate is provided within 24 hours of the scheduled start time.

For courses or activities that include PADI, SDI, TDI, or other digital training materials, the deposit is non-refundable once the eLearning or digital materials have been activated or issued. These materials remain valid and can still be used by the student.

Ready to Plan Your Wreck Dive?

Wreck diving in the Riviera Maya can be an unforgettable experience, but the right route matters. Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Puerto Morelos are different products with different logistics.

If you want the simplest local wreck route, ask about Mama Viña from Playa del Carmen. If you want a Cozumel wreck option, we can check if it fits your date and level. If you want the Puerto Morelos C-56 wreck route, use the dedicated Diving in Puerto Morelos product because it includes different transport and logistics.

If you are not ready for wreck diving yet, start with local reef diving in Playa del Carmen or a PADI ReActivate refresher. If you want structured wreck training, choose the PADI Wreck Diver Course.
