What Is PADI ReActivate?
PADI ReActivate is the official PADI refresher program for certified divers. Many divers simply call it a scuba refresher, PADI refresher, or diving refresher course.
The program is designed to refresh your dive knowledge, rebuild basic scuba skills, and help you feel more comfortable before returning to open water. It is not a beginner course. It is for people who are already certified but want a controlled way to get back into diving.
If you are certified but unsure about mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy, descent, ascent, hand signals, air checks, or general underwater comfort, this is the right place to start.
Who Should Do a Scuba Refresher Course?
You should consider a PADI refresher course if:
- You have not dived for more than 6–12 months.
- You are certified but feel nervous before your next dive.
- You forgot some basic scuba skills.
- You are not fully comfortable with buoyancy, mask clearing, or regulator recovery.
- You do not feel ready to join a normal fun dive yet.
- You have only a few logged dives and your last dive was a long time ago.
- You are planning several dive days in Playa del Carmen and want to make sure your first day back does not feel stressful.
- A dive center or guide recommended a refresher based on your last dive date, number of dives, or comfort level.
A refresher is not a punishment and it does not mean you are a bad diver. It is a smart way to protect your safety, improve your comfort, and avoid spending your first dive trying to remember basic skills underwater.
What to Expect During the PADI Refresher Course
The exact timing can change slightly depending on conditions, group size, paperwork, and the dive plan, but a normal PADI ReActivate day with Xico Dive Center looks like this:
- 9:30 AM – Meet at Xico Dive Center: check in, complete paperwork, confirm certification, and get fitted for rental equipment.
- Theory review: refresh important dive knowledge, safety rules, hand signals, air management, equalization, ascent procedures, and basic dive planning.
- Pool practice: review important scuba skills in a controlled environment before going to the ocean.
- 2 guided ocean dives: complete local ocean dives with an instructor or certified guide, usually on shallow reef sites chosen based on conditions and comfort level.
- Return around 3:30 PM: finish the day with more confidence and a better feeling for future dives.
Skills You May Review

- Air checks and gas awareness

Refresher Course or 2-Tank Reef Dive?
The right choice depends on your recent experience, number of logged dives, and comfort level.
If you have not dived for a long time, have only a few logged dives, feel rusty, or are unsure about basic skills, we may recommend PADI ReActivate for safety reasons before joining regular dives.
If you are current, comfortable, and already feel ready for normal reef diving, a 2-tank local reef dive in Playa del Carmen may be enough. For divers planning Cozumel, cenotes, bull shark season, or more challenging dives, our team may still recommend starting with local reef diving first so we can see your comfort, buoyancy, and control in the water.
Simple rule: if you feel rusty, nervous, or unsure about basic scuba skills, book the refresher. If you are current and comfortable, tell us your certification level, last dive date, and approximate number of dives, and we will recommend the right first dive plan.
Why We Ask About Your Last Dive Date
Before confirming the best dive plan, we usually ask for your certification level, last dive date, and approximate number of logged dives. This helps us recommend the safest and most enjoyable option.
Some divers are certified but have not been underwater for years. Others are certified, active, and comfortable. Those two divers should not always be booked into the same first dive plan.
If you are rusty or have limited experience, a refresher can make the rest of your trip much better. If you are already comfortable, we can recommend the right local reef, Cozumel, cenote, or other dive option based on your level and the conditions.
How to Book
To request availability, send us your preferred date, certification level, last dive date, approximate number of logged dives, and whether you have any concerns about skills, comfort, or medical history.
We will confirm availability and let you know if PADI ReActivate is the right option for you, or if a normal local reef dive is enough.
Frequently Asked Questions About the PADI Refresher Course
What should I bring?
Please bring your certification card or digital proof of certification, swimsuit, towel, and personal items for after the dives.
You may also want dry clothes, reef-safe sunscreen for after diving, and cash for tips.
Where is the meeting point?
We meet at Xico Dive Center, located on Flamingos Street between 40th Street North and 42nd Street North, in the Zazil-Ha neighborhood of Playa del Carmen.
Please arrive on time so we can complete check-in, paperwork, equipment fitting, and the dive briefing before heading to the boat.
Is PADI ReActivate the same as a PADI refresher course?
Yes. Most divers call it a PADI refresher course or scuba refresher course. The official PADI name is PADI ReActivate.
It is designed for certified divers who want to refresh their knowledge, review important skills, and rebuild confidence before diving again.
Do scuba certifications expire?
Most scuba certifications do not expire, including PADI Open Water certification. However, your comfort, confidence, and practical skills can fade if you have not dived in a long time.
That is why many divers choose a refresher before returning to the ocean.
When should I do a scuba refresher?
Many divers choose a refresher if they have not dived in 6–12 months, feel nervous, forgot basic skills, have only a few logged dives, or do not feel ready for a normal fun dive yet.
If you are unsure, tell us your last dive date and experience level. We will recommend the safest option.
Is this course only for certified divers?
Yes. The PADI ReActivate refresher course is for already certified divers.
If you are not certified yet, contact us and we will recommend the right beginner option.
How long does the refresher course take?
The program usually takes around 5 hours. A typical schedule is 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, including theory review, pool practice, and 2 guided ocean dives.
Timing can vary depending on group size, conditions, paperwork, equipment fitting, and the dive plan.
Is rental gear included?
Yes. Rental equipment is included in the PADI ReActivate refresher course price.
If you have your own gear, you are welcome to bring it. Please let us know before the course so we can prepare tanks and weights correctly.
What skills will we practice?
You may review skills such as mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control, proper weighting, descents, ascents, hand signals, air checks, buddy communication, and safe diving procedures.
The exact review depends on your level, comfort, and what the instructor needs to see.
Should I do a refresher before Cozumel, cenotes, or bull shark diving?
If you have not dived for a long time, have only a few logged dives, or feel rusty, we may recommend a refresher before more demanding dives for safety reasons.
If you are current and comfortable, we may recommend a local reef dive first before Cozumel, cenotes, or bull shark season, depending on your experience, comfort, and the conditions.
What if I have not dived for several years?
That is exactly when a refresher is often useful. If it has been several years, we may take more time with the skill review and recommend a conservative dive plan for your first day back.
Tell us when your last dive was and how comfortable you feel, so we can recommend the best option.
What if I have medical concerns?
If you have medical concerns, recent surgery, illness, injury, medication changes, or any condition that may affect diving, you must get medical clearance from a qualified doctor before diving.
We cannot decide if you are medically fit to dive. Safety comes first.
What is the cancellation policy?
You can cancel or modify your reservation up to 24 hours before the scheduled activity or course start time with no cancellation fee.
If you cancel or modify less than 24 hours before the scheduled start time, or if you do not show up, the prepaid deposit is non-refundable.
If Xico Dive Center cancels the activity or course because of weather, port closure, unsafe conditions, or operational reasons, we will first try to reschedule. If rescheduling is not possible, no cancellation fee will apply.
For medical cancellations, no cancellation fee will apply only if a valid medical certificate is provided within 24 hours of the scheduled start time.
For courses or activities that include PADI, SDI, TDI, or other digital training materials, the deposit is non-refundable once the eLearning or digital materials have been activated or issued. These materials remain valid and can still be used by the student.
