The experience

Dive the Local Reefs of Playa del Carmen

Local reef diving is one of the easiest ways for certified divers to get underwater in Playa del Carmen. The reefs are close to shore, boat rides are short, and you can complete two ocean dives without spending the entire day traveling.

Playa del Carmen offers a mix of shallow reefs, deeper reef profiles, walls and swim-throughs. The exact dive sites are not fixed in advance. Our dive team chooses the most suitable sites each day based on weather, current, visibility, port status, marine-life activity, certification level and diver comfort.

This makes local reef diving a strong first dive in the area, an easy standalone dive day, or a good way to get comfortable before continuing with cenotes, Cozumel or other more specialized dives.

What You May See

Depending on the dive site and daily conditions, Playa del Carmen's local reefs can include coral formations, tropical fish, rays, turtles, moray eels, nurse sharks, swim-throughs and schools of fish.

Marine life is wild and sightings are never guaranteed, but the variety of local reef sites gives divers a good introduction to Caribbean diving directly from Playa del Carmen.

  2. Briefing & Boat

    Your guide explains the dive plan and safety procedures before heading to the nearby boat pickup and local reef.

  3. First Reef Dive

    Dive the first site selected for the day's conditions, certification levels and diver experience.

  4. Surface Interval

    Relax on the boat between dives with water and cookies while the team prepares for the second dive.

  5. Second Reef Dive & Return

    Complete the second local reef dive and return to Playa del Carmen and Xico Dive Center.

Arrival / check-in: Please arrive on time for the selected trip so we can complete check-in, paperwork, equipment fitting and the dive briefing before heading to the boat.

Boat / transport: Local reef sites are normally reached by a short boat ride of approximately 5–25 minutes. The exact dive sites are selected daily based on weather, current, visibility, port status, certification level, diver experience and safety.

Departure details: Morning trip: 08:30–12:00. Afternoon trip: 12:30–15:30. The morning usually allows the option of a deeper first dive followed by a shallower second dive, while the afternoon usually focuses on two shallower dives. Exact dive sites and profiles depend on daily conditions and diver experience.
