Training schedule: Standard three-day course: pool/knowledge review, two ocean dives, then two final ocean dives. Timing can change with student progress and conditions.

Open-water logistics: Four ocean training dives operate from a local dive boat on suitable Playa del Carmen reefs.

Schedule note: Start dates are available subject to instructor availability, student readiness and operational confirmation.

Certification requirements: Training is conducted and evaluated by an appropriately qualified instructor for the agency and course. Certification or recognition is issued only after the applicable course requirements are successfully completed.

Course Details

Junior Open Water in Playa del Carmen

The PADI Junior Open Water Diver course gives children aged 10-14 the same structured foundation of knowledge, confined-water skills and four open-water training dives, with age-specific depth and supervision rules built into the program.

Pool Skills Before the Caribbean

Training begins with eLearning and a dedicated pool session next to Xico Dive Center. The student practices equipment use, mask and regulator skills, buoyancy, buddy procedures and safe ascents before applying those skills on the local reefs.

Four Real Ocean Training Dives

The four open-water dives take place from a boat on Playa del Carmen reefs. The instructor selects conservative sites and adapts the pace to the young diver’s comfort, performance and the day’s conditions.

A Certification That Can Grow With Them

Junior Open Water gives young divers a real certification rather than a one-day experience. As they get older, PADI junior depth and supervision limits change, and motivated students can continue to Junior Advanced and Junior Rescue training.

Questions before you book?

What is the minimum age for PADI Junior Open Water?

The minimum age is 10. Divers aged 10-11 have more restrictive depth and supervision limits than divers aged 12-14. Xico explains the applicable junior limits to the student and parent before training.

Does my child need previous scuba experience?

No previous scuba certification or scuba experience is required. The student must be comfortable in the water, meet the required swimming/water-skill standards and complete the diver medical screening.

What are the Junior Open Water depth limits?

Ages 10-11 are limited to 12 m / 40 ft and must dive with the required parent, guardian or PADI Professional supervision. Ages 12-14 can dive to the applicable Junior Open Water limits, up to 18 m / 60 ft, subject to training and local conditions.

Will Xico run my course if I am the only student?

Yes. Xico can run its courses with one booked student, so you do not have to wait for us to fill a group. Your requested start date still needs instructor and operational confirmation.

What paperwork is required for students under 18?

A parent or legal guardian must complete the required participation and medical paperwork for a minor. Age-specific PADI limits and supervision rules continue to apply after certification where relevant.

Do I need medical clearance for scuba training?

Scuba students complete the required diver medical screening. Depending on your answers, physician approval may be required before in-water training. Any external physician or consultation cost is separate unless a course page explicitly says otherwise.

What happens if weather or a port closure affects course dives?

If weather, sea conditions or a port closure prevent required ocean training, Xico will first try to reschedule the affected training according to safe conditions and availability. Certification is issued only after the required performance requirements are completed.
