Learn to Scuba Dive in Playa del Carmen

Become a certified diver in the Caribbean with Xico Dive Center's PADI Open Water Diver course in Playa del Carmen. The standard course combines PADI eLearning, confined-water skill development and four open-water training dives on the local reefs. No previous scuba certification or scuba experience is required.

Standard, Express and Referral Completion

The normal Xico Open Water schedule is three days. Students who are fully prepared for a concentrated schedule can request the accelerated two-day Express format. If you already started PADI Open Water with another instructor or dive center, Xico can also complete a valid referral after reviewing your paperwork. Referral training may cover the remaining pool and ocean work or only open-water dives 3 and 4, depending on what has already been signed off.

All of these are routes to the same PADI Open Water Diver certification. Xico confirms the correct training option, schedule and current price after checking your preparation or referral documentation.

What You Will Learn

The course builds the practical skills and judgment you need to dive safely with a buddy within the limits of your training. You will work on equipment setup, breathing and movement underwater, mask and regulator skills, buoyancy, safe descents and ascents, buddy procedures, underwater communication, basic dive planning and responses to common problems.

What Happens After Certification?

After all required knowledge development, confined-water work, water-skills assessment and four open-water training dives are completed successfully, your PADI Open Water Diver certification can be processed. Continue building experience on our 2-tank reef dives in Playa del Carmen, then consider the PADI Advanced Open Water course.

Not Ready to Commit to Certification?

If you would rather try scuba once before deciding, start with Discover Scuba Diving in Playa del Carmen. Students aged 10–14 should review the Junior Open Water course for age-specific certification rules.

      Good to Know

      Questions before you book?

Can I complete the PADI Open Water course in 3 days?

Xico's standard PADI Open Water Diver course is organized as a 3-day program combining PADI eLearning, confined-water training and four open-water training dives. The published schedule is a typical plan rather than a guaranteed clock: certification depends on successfully completing all course requirements, and timing can change with student progress, instructor availability, weather, sea conditions or port status.

Can I complete PADI eLearning before arriving in Playa del Carmen?

Yes. PADI eLearning and the required digital study materials are included in Xico's Open Water course. Completing as much of the eLearning as possible before your first in-water session gives you more time to focus on practical training with your instructor in Playa del Carmen.

Is the Open Water course suitable if I am nervous or completely new to scuba?

Yes, the PADI Open Water Diver course is designed as a first scuba certification and no previous scuba experience is required. At Xico, you begin with knowledge development and confined-water training before the ocean dives, so skills are introduced progressively. You still need to be comfortable in the water and complete the required water-skills and medical screening requirements.

Do I need a medical certificate for the PADI Open Water course?

Every student completes the required diver medical questionnaire before participating. Depending on your answers, physician approval may be required before you can take part in scuba training. If medical clearance is required, any external physician or consultation cost is separate from the Xico course price.

What happens if weather or a port closure affects my ocean training?

If weather, sea conditions or a port closure prevent scheduled ocean training, Xico will first try to reschedule the affected dives according to safe operating conditions and availability. Your certification is completed only after the required training dives and performance requirements are successfully finished. The normal Xico cancellation and weather policies apply.

Can I complete the PADI Open Water course in 2 days?

Yes. Xico can offer an accelerated 2-day Open Water option for students who complete the required knowledge development in advance and are ready for a concentrated training schedule. It leads to the same PADI Open Water Diver certification and still requires successful completion of all required confined-water skills, water skills and four open-water training dives. The 2-day format is confirmed before booking because student readiness, instructor availability and conditions must support the accelerated schedule.

Can Xico finish an Open Water course I started somewhere else?

Yes. Xico can complete a valid PADI Open Water referral after reviewing the referral paperwork and confirming exactly which knowledge, confined-water and open-water components remain. This can include a pool-plus-ocean completion or only open-water referral dives 3 and 4. Send the referral documents before booking so Xico can confirm the correct training scope, schedule and current price option.
