This is the best choice if you want an easy, high-value dive day without losing the whole day to transportation. The boat ride to most local dive sites is usually only 5 to 25 minutes.

Morning or Afternoon Reef Dive?

We offer two fixed local reef dive schedules:

  • Morning reef dive: 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM. Usually best if you want the option of a deeper first dive followed by a shallower second dive.
  • Afternoon reef dive: 12:30 PM – 3:30 PM. Usually best if you prefer two shallower dives or want to keep your morning free.

The exact dive sites are chosen daily by the dive team based on weather, current, visibility, port status, marine life activity, certification level, and diver comfort.

Do I need to be certified for this dive?

Yes. You need Open Water Diver certification or higher to join the 2-tank local reef dive.

If you are not certified yet, start with Discover Scuba Diving or the PADI Open Water Diver Course.

What time are the local reef dives?

The morning option is 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM. The afternoon option is 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM.

When you contact us, tell us which option you prefer and we will confirm availability.

Where is the meeting point?

We meet at Xico Dive Center, located on Flamingos Street between 40th Street North and 42nd Street North, in the Zazil-Ha neighborhood of Playa del Carmen.

Please arrive on time so we can complete check-in, paperwork, equipment fitting, and the dive briefing before heading to the boat.

Is rental equipment included?

The base price is 1800 MXN (≈$97 USD) per person. Premium rental equipment is available for 500 MXN (≈$27 USD) if you need gear.

We use clean, modern, well-maintained rental equipment because comfort and trust in your gear make a big difference underwater.

Can I bring my own equipment?

Yes. You are welcome to bring your own dive gear. Please let us know before the dive so we can prepare your tanks and weights correctly.

Which dive sites will we visit?

The exact dive sites are chosen daily based on weather, current, visibility, port status, diver level, and safety.

What marine life can I see?

Depending on the site and conditions, you may see tropical fish, coral, rays, turtles, moray eels, nurse sharks, and schools of fish.

Marine life is wild, so sightings are never guaranteed.

What is the water temperature in Playa del Carmen?

Water temperatures are usually around 26–29°C / 78–84°F. A 3mm wetsuit is normally enough for most divers.

Can I dive if I have not dived in a while?

If it has been over a year since your last dive, we recommend a refresher before joining. This helps you feel safer, more comfortable, and more confident underwater.

Is this a good first dive in Playa del Carmen?

Yes. For certified divers, local reef diving is often the best first dive in Playa del Carmen because boat rides are short, logistics are simple, and the dive sites can be matched to your comfort level.

Should I choose Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, or cenotes?

Choose Playa del Carmen local reefs if you want an easy 2-tank ocean dive close to town. Choose Cozumel diving if you want bigger drift reefs. Choose cenote diving if you want a completely different freshwater cavern experience.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel or modify your reservation up to 24 hours before the scheduled activity or course start time with no cancellation fee.

If you cancel or modify less than 24 hours before the scheduled start time, or if you do not show up, the prepaid deposit is non-refundable.

If Xico Dive Center cancels the activity or course because of weather, port closure, unsafe conditions, or operational reasons, we will first try to reschedule. If rescheduling is not possible, no cancellation fee will apply.

For medical cancellations, no cancellation fee will apply only if a valid medical certificate is provided within 24 hours of the scheduled start time.

For courses or activities that include PADI, SDI, TDI, or other digital training materials, the deposit is non-refundable once the eLearning or digital materials have been activated or issued. These materials remain valid and can still be used by the student.
