Description of the Underwater Naturalist Specialty Course:

The PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty is a one-day course for certified divers who want to deepen their connection with the ocean. You’ll learn how to better identify marine life, understand how ecosystems work, and observe animal behaviors without disturbing the environment. The course includes a fun theory session and two dives focused on discovery and awareness.

What to Expect:

Theory Session – Start with a short class at our dive center where you’ll learn about local marine ecosystems, how different species interact, and how to dive respectfully around aquatic life.
2 Ocean Dives – Head out on two guided dives in Playa del Carmen. Your instructor will help you spot and identify different fish, corals, and invertebrates. You’ll also learn to recognize behaviors and relationships between marine creatures.
Debrief & Certification – After your dives, your instructor will review what you saw, help you learn more about the animals you encountered, and award you your PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty Certification.

Is certification required?

Yes, you must be at least Open Water certified to join the PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty Course!

What are the benefits of taking this course?

You’ll gain a deeper appreciation of the underwater world, learn how to identify local marine life, and understand the interactions between species. This course makes every dive more interesting and helps you protect what you love.

Do I need to complete any theory or exams?

Yes, there’s a bit of independent study to do before the dives. It’s not a full classroom course like the Open Water, but you’ll review some theory—don’t worry, there’s no exam.

What will I learn during the course?

You’ll learn to distinguish between different aquatic plants, invertebrates, and fish families, as well as their roles in the ecosystem and how to dive responsibly around them.

What is the Cancellation Policy?

If canceled or modified up to 24 hours before the trip date, no fee will be charged. If canceled or modified later, or in the event of a no-show, 100% of the prepaid deposit will be charged. No fee applies if the activity is canceled by Xico Dive Center or cannot be rescheduled due to rough sea conditions or medical reasons (if a valid certificate is provided within 24 hours after no-show or cancellation). Under no circumstances, if there is a cancellation and e-learning has been activated, you will not be refunded your deposit for the e-learning.
