ABCs of Diving – Letters P and Q

PADI: PADI stands for Professional Association of Diving Instructors, one of the world’s leading scuba diving training organizations. Founded in 1966, PADI offers a range of certification courses, from beginner to professional levels. PADI’s mission is to teach divers to enjoy the sport safely and responsibly while promoting underwater conservation.
Panic: Panic refers to a state of extreme fear or anxiety that can occur underwater, potentially leading to poor decision-making or unsafe behavior. Panic can be triggered by various factors, such as equipment failure or becoming disoriented. To prevent panic, divers are trained in emergency procedures, stress management, and staying calm under pressure. It’s important to practice calm breathing and have a clear plan for emergencies.
Pony Bottle: A Pony Bottle is a small, independent air tank used as a backup air supply. It is usually carried on a diver’s harness or tank and can be used in case of an emergency, such as running out of air from the main tank. Pony bottles are often used by technical divers and in situations where additional air supply provides extra safety.
Pressure: Pressure in diving refers to the force exerted by the weight of the water above the diver. As a diver descends, the pressure increases, which affects the body, equipment, and gas volumes. Understanding pressure is crucial for managing buoyancy, gas consumption, and ensuring safety during ascents and descents. Pressure is measured in atmospheres (ATM) or psi (pounds per square inch).
Purge: To Purge means to clear or remove water from a regulator or other diving equipment. This is usually done by pressing a purge button on the regulator, which forces air through the system to expel any water. Purging is an important procedure to ensure that the regulator functions correctly and that the diver has a clear and unobstructed air supply.
Quad: A Quad refers to a type of diving gauge or computer that displays four essential pieces of information, such as depth, time, tank pressure, and temperature. Quads provide divers with a comprehensive view of their dive data, helping to manage dive profiles and ensure safety. Some dive computers also integrate additional features, like dive tables and decompression algorithms.
Quick Link: A Quick Link is a type of metal connector used to securely attach various pieces of diving equipment, such as regulators, gauges, or lights, to a diver’s harness or tank.
