Helium

Helium is an inert gas used in technical diving to create breathing gas mixtures, like Trimix. It helps reduce the narcotic effects of nitrogen at greater depths, making deep dives safer.

Hood

A diving hood is made of neoprene and covers the head and neck to provide thermal protection in cold water. It helps retain body heat and increases comfort during the dive.

Hydrostatic Pressure

Hydrostatic pressure is the weight of water above the diver. It increases with depth and affects buoyancy and gas consumption. Divers must adjust their gear to maintain neutral buoyancy and manage the denser breathing gas.

Hyperthermia

Hyperthermia occurs when the body overheats, which can happen in warm water or with excessive thermal protection. Prevent it by hydrating well, wearing appropriate gear, and taking breaks to cool down.

Hyperventilation

Hyperventilation involves rapid or deep breathing, reducing carbon dioxide levels in the blood. This can cause lightheadedness or unconsciousness underwater. Controlled, steady breathing helps prevent it.

Hypoxia

Hypoxia is a lack of adequate oxygen supply, which can result from improper gas mixtures or breath-hold diving. Signs include dizziness and confusion. Prevent it by ensuring proper gas mixtures, checking equipment, and avoiding pushing breath-hold limits.

Scuba diving is a blend of technical skill, environmental awareness, and appreciation for marine life. By familiarizing yourself with these diving terms, you’ll enhance your diving knowledge and safety practices, ensuring each underwater adventure is a memorable and enjoyable experience. Whether you’re exploring reefs, wrecks, or underwater caves, the underwater world awaits with its mysteries and beauty. Happy diving!
