The experience
A First Cenote Dive That Feels Completely Different From the Ocean
If you are certified and want to experience cenote diving for the first time, Chac Mool is one of the easiest places to understand why divers travel to the Riviera Maya for it. The dives are relatively shallow, the cavern spaces feel wide, and natural light creates some of the most dramatic moments of the day.
This is not a full cave dive. You are following a guided recreational cavern route with a qualified cenote guide, staying on the established guideline and within the cavern environment. That makes Chac Mool a strong introduction for divers who have good buoyancy but have never experienced an overhead cavern before.
Two Different Routes in One Cenote Day
Your two dives normally explore the Kukulkan and Little Brother routes. Kukulkan is famous for intense sunlight entering the cavern and the shimmering halocline where fresh and salt water meet. Little Brother adds a different atmosphere with decorated limestone, darker sections and an air dome that can make the cavern feel like an underground cathedral.
Instead of repeating the same dive twice, you get two distinct views of the Chac Mool system in one trip.
Why Chac Mool Is Such a Strong First Cenote Choice
The maximum depth is only about 14 m / 45 ft, but the experience feels completely different from a normal shallow reef dive. Crystal-clear freshwater, changing light, rock formations and the halocline create a sense of depth and space that photographs rarely capture.
You still need to be comfortable underwater. Good buoyancy, calm movement and following the guide are more important here than collecting a high number of logged dives. If you are certified but rusty, tell us when you request availability and we will recommend whether Chac Mool is the right first step for your current level.
Everything Organized from Xico in Playa del Carmen
Meet at Xico Dive Center in the morning and we handle the cenote day from there: round-trip transportation, entrance fees, two guided cavern dives, a small group, sandwich and refreshments, and the dive-center facilities when you return. You do not need to organize a rental car, cenote entrance or a separate guide.
Chac Mool is also one of the cenotes where personal underwater cameras and GoPros are not permitted for divers. An authorized professional photographer is normally available on site, so you can still choose to get photos without carrying a camera through the cavern.

Is Chac Mool a good first cenote dive?
Yes. Chac Mool is one of the strongest first-cenote options for certified divers because the routes are relatively shallow, the caverns are spacious, natural light is a major part of the experience and you get two different cavern routes in the same day. You should still have reasonable buoyancy control and be comfortable following your guide in a cavern environment.
Which routes do we dive at Cenote Chac Mool?
The Chac Mool day normally includes the Kukulkan and Little Brother cavern routes. Together they give you two different looks at the same cenote system, including wide cavern spaces, limestone formations, halocline effects, light beams and an air dome. The guide may adjust the order according to site conditions and the group.
What is the halocline at Chac Mool?
A halocline is the visible boundary where freshwater and saltwater meet. When you swim through it, the different densities can create a shimmering, blurred visual effect that looks almost unreal. Chac Mool is well known for this effect and it is one of the reasons the dive feels so different from ocean diving.
Can I take a GoPro or camera diving at Cenote Chac Mool?
No. Personal underwater cameras, GoPros and other cameras are not permitted for divers at Chac Mool under the cenote's current site rules. An authorized professional photography service is normally available on site if you would like photos or video of your dives. That service is optional and is not included in Xico's dive price.
What is the water temperature at Cenote Chac Mool?
Riviera Maya cenotes are generally around 24-26°C / 75-79°F throughout the year. Most divers are comfortable in a 3 mm wetsuit, although temperature comfort varies from person to person.
Is recreational Chac Mool diving the same as cave diving?
No. Xico's recreational Chac Mool trip is a guided cavern dive for certified recreational divers. The route stays within the cavern zone, follows the permanent guideline and is planned so the entrance or natural-light zone remains part of the dive environment. Full cave penetration is a different form of diving that requires specialized cave training and equipment.
What if I am certified but rusty or not confident with my buoyancy?
Tell us before booking. Chac Mool can be an excellent first cenote, but good buoyancy and calm control still matter in a cavern environment. If you have been out of the water for a while or are uncomfortable with buoyancy, we may recommend a refresher or an easier local dive first so you can enjoy the cenote instead of feeling stressed.
