Diving in Cenote Angelita - Xico Dive Center

Diving in Cenote Angelita

Tulum

The Cenote Angelita, located near Tulum and about a 30-minute drive from Xico Dive Center, is a unique and fascinating dive site known for its surreal underwater river. This phenomenon is created by a distinct layer of hydrogen sulfide that separates the freshwater above from the saltwater below, forming a halocline where the two types of water meet but don’t immediately mix due to differences in density and salinity. The result is a visually stunning and eerie landscape, with the halocline resembling an underwater river or cloud. Cenote Angelita reaches depths of around 98ft/30m, and visibility can vary, with the clearest conditions found in the freshwater layer above the halocline. The opacity of the hydrogen sulfide layer creates a dark, forest-like appearance due to the tree branches lying at the bottom of the cenote. This unique environment provides excellent opportunities for divers and underwater photographers to capture the extraordinary landscape. Diving in Cenote Angelita is generally more suitable for experienced divers due to the depth and potential for reduced visibility in the hydrogen sulfide layer. As divers descend through the freshwater layer, they pass through the hydrogen sulfide cloud before reaching the clear saltwater below, experiencing a one-of-a-kind dive. The cenote also features stunning underwater rock formations and submerged trees, making it a favorite destination for adventurous divers and underwater photographers. Cenote Angelita’s remarkable geological features and the striking halocline effect make it a unique and mesmerizing destination for those exploring the cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula.
