Here are the top underwater wrecks you can explore when you dive with us in Playa del Carmen and nearby destinations:
Mama Viña – Local Wreck Dive in Playa del Carmen
The Mama Viña wreck is one of the most popular wreck dive sites in Playa del Carmen. Originally a shrimp boat, it was intentionally sunk in the 1990s to create an artificial reef. It now rests at around 27 meters and is fully encrusted with coral, sponges, and marine life. Divers frequently encounter schools of snapper, barracuda, jacks, and even the occasional sea turtle cruising by. The strong currents here make this an exciting drift wreck dive and a favorite among experienced divers. Mama Viña is a must-do for anyone interested in wreck diving in the Mexican Caribbean.
C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl – Cozumel Wreck Dive Adventure
A short ride from Playa del Carmen takes you to Cozumel, home to the C-53 wreck. This ex-US Navy minesweeper was scuttled in 2000 to form an artificial reef and is now one of the most famous wreck diving sites in Cozumel. Sitting at around 21 meters, the C-53 is ideal for both Advanced Open Water divers and those completing their wreck diving certification. With large open swim-throughs, intact structure, and excellent visibility, it’s perfect for underwater photography. The surrounding reef is also teeming with groupers, rays, and tropical fish, making it a complete dive experience.
C-56 Juan Escutia – Puerto Morelos Deep Wreck Dive
For a true wreck diving adventure, the C-56 wreck in Puerto Morelos is a fantastic dive. This WWII-era ship was sunk intentionally for divers and now lies at a depth of 28 meters. The structure is mostly intact, with fascinating features and frequent sightings of nurse sharks, schools of fish, and moray eels. Because of the depth and occasional current, this site is best for experienced divers or those completing the PADI Deep Diver or Wreck Diver specialty. It’s one of the most exciting wreck dives near Playa del Carmen and a great addition to any dive trip.
