Thanks to the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, Playa del Carmen is a year-round scuba diving destination. Water temperatures typically range from 26°C to 29°C (78°F to 84°F), making it comfortable for diving with a short wetsuit or even no wetsuit in the summer months. Visibility is excellent most of the year, often exceeding 20 meters, and the reefs are full of life no matter when you visit.
If you’re an experienced diver looking for something unforgettable, plan your trip between November and March—this is bull shark season in Playa del Carmen. During these months, female bull sharks migrate to the area’s deeper sandy bottoms just offshore. This thrilling dive is done under professional supervision and offers a respectful interaction with these powerful and graceful animals. It’s a highlight of diving in Playa del Carmen and attracts shark lovers from around the world.
If you prefer calm seas, warm water, and fewer people on the boats, late spring and summer are excellent times to dive. From May to September, the sea is generally flat, and dive conditions are ideal for all levels, including beginners. It’s a great season for reef diving, drift diving, and day trips to Cozumel. This is also the time of year when you’ll see the most marine life activity, including turtles, rays, and large schools of fish.
While not in Playa del Carmen directly, the nearby waters around Isla Mujeres host one of the world’s largest whale shark aggregations from June to August. Many visitors combine diving in Playa del Carmen with a whale shark snorkeling tour during this season. It’s an easy add-on to your scuba diving trip and one of the most incredible wildlife experiences in the region.
One of the most unique things about diving in Playa del Carmen is the ability to explore freshwater cenotes. These ancient sinkholes are crystal-clear, filled with natural formations, and diveable all year long. Because they are underground, cenote diving is not affected by ocean weather or storms. Even if there’s wind or rain on the coast, you can still dive the cenotes and enjoy perfect visibility and stillness.
High season in Playa del Carmen typically runs from December to April. This is when the weather is driest and most visitors are escaping winter in the north. Diving is fantastic, and you’ll find lively energy in town and great conditions on the reefs.
If you’re looking to avoid crowds, visit between May and October. These months are quieter and offer great deals on accommodation and dive packages. While it’s technically hurricane season, major storms are rare, and most days are sunny with occasional showers.
