Non-Feeding Bull Shark Observation in Playa del Carmen

The Bull Shark Observation Dive is Xico's non-feeding shark option. The day combines one controlled bull shark observation dive with one guided local Playa del Carmen reef dive.

Check-Dive Rule and Screening

Open Water certification or higher is required. If you have 25 logged dives or fewer, Xico requires a check dive before the shark site. With more than 25 logged dives, the automatic check-dive requirement does not apply, but recent experience, buoyancy, comfort at depth and overall suitability are still reviewed before confirmation.

Two Dives, Two Different Experiences

The shark dive is focused on calm positioning and observing wild animals without a feeding setup. The second dive is a local reef dive selected according to conditions and the group's experience.

Operating Season Is Not the Same as Shark Presence

Xico operates its scheduled bull shark diving season from November 1 through March 31. Individual bull sharks can still be seen outside that operating season, including spring or late summer, but an off-season sighting does not mean the seasonal shark-dive product is operating on that date. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Relax on the boat with water and cookies while the team prepares for the second dive.

Finish the trip with a Playa del Carmen reef dive selected for the day's conditions and the group's experience.

Is the Bull Shark Observation Dive a feeding dive?

No. The Bull Shark Observation Dive is the non-feeding option. There is no baiting or feeding during this experience. The trip includes one bull shark observation dive and one local reef dive.

Should I choose the Observation Dive or the Feeding Dive?

Choose the Observation Dive if you want a non-feeding shark experience and a complete 2-tank dive day with one bull shark dive plus one local reef dive. Choose the Feeding Dive if your priority is the closest and most intense 1-tank bull shark encounter. Your certification, recent experience and comfort at depth should also guide the decision.

Are bull shark sightings guaranteed?

No. Bull sharks are wild animals and sightings can never be guaranteed. During the season the chances can be good, but shark movement, weather, visibility, current, port status and local conditions can affect every dive. We give honest information based on recent activity before confirming the trip.

What if I have 25 logged dives or fewer?

A check dive is required before the bull shark site if you have 25 logged dives or fewer. The guide uses it to assess buoyancy, comfort, air control and your ability to follow the shark-dive plan. With more than 25 logged dives, the automatic check-dive requirement does not apply, but Xico still screens certification, recent experience and diver suitability before confirmation. Passing a check dive is not automatic approval; the guide makes the final suitability decision.

Can I do the Bull Shark Observation Dive if I have not dived recently?

Recent diving experience matters for this dive. If you are rusty, we may recommend a local Playa del Carmen reef dive, a check dive or a PADI ReActivate refresher before the shark dive. The goal is to make sure you are calm, comfortable at depth and able to follow the briefing without stress.

Is the Bull Shark Observation Dive safe?

Bull shark diving is not risk-free and should not be treated like a casual reef dive. Risk is managed through diver screening, a detailed briefing, suitable conditions, controlled group positioning, calm behavior and professional guide judgment. Divers must follow instructions, maintain good buoyancy and never chase, touch or block the sharks.

Can I take a camera on the Bull Shark Observation Dive?

Yes, if you are already comfortable using it without losing buoyancy, position or awareness of the guide. Safety and control come before photography. If using a camera would distract you from the dive plan, leave it behind for the shark dive.
